In 1982, UUCUC celebrated its Silver Jubilee – twenty-five years after the 1957 merger of the Unitarian and Universalist churches in Champaign and Urbana. Julia Triplett, George Triplett, David Gross, and Bill Glaeser wrote and presented a skit featuring an imagined glimpse at the church at its Golden Jubilee in 2007. They spoke about dreams, fears, challenges. They considered what might change in the membership, the building, the finances. They predicted how we would worship, cooperate with other religions, relate to Channing-Murray.
One of the most prescient guesses about the future addressed the attendance on Sunday mornings. “… in 25 years we will not need to drive across town to hear a sermon. There will be other means of transmitting the sermon into our homes. But we will gather as a congregation just as we do today, not just to hear a talk, but to interact with people. We will gather. We may find the coffee hour more important than the sermon, but we will gather. A two-hour period to reflect, to give and receive support and to give and receive inspiration from our friends, that will be the core of the church during the Golden Jubilee.”
